Engineering is defined as applying the laws of mathematics as well as science, in a way in which the properties of matter and the natural energy resources can be made useful to the mankind. It applies scientific knowledge to work out technical solutions for humans. Engineering can be divided into different branches, some of the most prominent and major ones are as follows:

 

Electrical Engineering

 

It is the application of physics and its laws that deal with properties like magnetic properties and electricity governing along with other matters that help develops new technologies. Engineers working in this field work to develop latest techniques and develop the soft-wares and apply their knowledge to work in harmony with telephonic devices, neon lights etc. Everything that involves the use of electricity has to do with the branch of Electrical engineering. It is one of the most prominent professions nowadays.

 

Mechanical Engineering

 

This respective field of engineering is very expanded and unique. Heat and motion are some common interests that engineers in this specific field share with one another. They study the operations of a machine and make sure that it runs smoothly during an operation. Studying automobiles and their entire structure, development of successful aircrafts as well as space crafts, building and functioning of naval commodities and providing biotechnical facilities are the most prominent concerns of this mechanical engineering field.

 

Civil Engineering

Chemical engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with chemicals, their reactions to produce new and advanced chemical products that help sustain life and provide a solution to the existing problems in any given society and circumstances. Studying atoms and the molecules of a given substance and how they interact and therefore, react with one another to form different compositions, is what is majorly studied under this branch of engineering. These compositions are researched up on a microscopic level, to study the molecular and atomic interaction in a detail – like what type of a position molecules and atoms take when the given substance is in its molten state or a frozen one and so on. These changes in structure are also studied on a larger scale or a macroscopic level that tends to deal with processes like acid rain and its harmful effects on the rain forests.

 

 

Environmental Engineering

 

Environmental engineering is the branch of engineering that provides help with the advancement in the distribution systems of water, methods related to recycling, the treatment of sewage and the plants required. It also deals with the methods to eliminate air pollution, water pollution and other types of pollution. The environmental engineers always devise ways in which they work to eliminate the harmful effects of pesticides on the environment and the soil pollution caused by them, as a result.

 

Metallurgical and Material Engineering

 

The engineers in this respective field of engineering deal with the methods of extraction, processing, refinement as well as the combination and the manufacture of materials that are strong and tough enough o resist changes in composition like erosion and corrosion etc. combine, and manufacture natural substances to create new materials that are stronger and resist corrosion. Metallurgical engineers tend to work only with metals and alloys etc.

 

Mining Engineering

 

One of the major branches of engineering is mining engineering in which the mining engineers deal with the minerals found in the earth. They locate and mine them. They plan and lay out the needed mines, manage the construction of those mines, work out plans for the transportation of the materials, and then fulfill the task of leaving the site in its natural state after carrying out the entire activity, once the mining purposes have been taken care of. Mineral and mining engineers need to know how to mine the natural wealth underground without destroying the land above or disrupting the people that live on it.

 

Manufacturing Engineering

 

This prominent branch of engineering deals with the production and manufacturing of almost everything from cars to stereo players. Moreover, from mechanical devices like blending machines to electrical cells, the manufacturing Engineers are involved in the designing, planning, management, development and all the improvements needed in the specific machinery in the systems that are involved in the production of the concerned products. The engineers concerned with this field are focused upon making this innovative and useful. The knowledge regarding the products, the types of materials used, the entire process of arrangement, the equipment required, and ensuring the quality standards is all what is required in this field.

 

All the above types of engineering are unique and most helpful in their own distinct ways. There are other sub-branches of a few of these that narrow down study, deeper into specific categories. However, without the study of matter in terms of engineering, man would have gotten nowhere near where he stands today.[1]

Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works like roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings. Civil engineering is the oldest engineering discipline after military engineering and it was defined to distinguish non-military engineering from military engineering. It is traditionally broken into several sub-disciplines. Civil engineering takes place on all levels: in the public sector from municipal through to national governments, and in the private sector from individual homeowners through to international companies.

Civil engineers typically possess an academic degree with a major in civil engineering. The length of study for such a degree is usually three to five years and the completed degree is usually designated as a Bachelor of Engineering, though some universities designate the degree as a Bachelor of Science. The degree generally includes units covering physics, mathematics, project management, design and specific topics in civil engineering. Initially such topics cover most, if not all, of the sub-disciplines of civil engineering. Students then choose to specialize in one or more sub-disciplines towards the end of the degree. While an Undergraduate (BEng/BSc) Degree will normally provide successful students with industry accredited qualification, some universities offer postgraduate engineering awards (MEng/MSc) which allow students to further specialize in their particular area of interest within engineering.

 

In most countries, a Bachelor’s degree in engineering represents the first step towards professional certification and the degree program itself is certified by a professional body. After completing a certified degree program the engineer must satisfy a range of requirements (including work experience and exam requirements) before being certified. Once certified, the engineer is designated the title of Professional Engineer.[1]
